Most of what a southern Alberta business or family needs, in one place

  • Personal income tax

T1 preparation and planning for employment income, investment income, rental property, self-employment, farm income, pension and retirement income, and final returns for estates.

We also handle the correspondence side: CRA processing reviews, pre-assessment reviews, matching program letters, adjustment requests, and appeals. If you've received a letter with a deadline on it, that's routine work here.

  • Corporate income tax

T2 and Alberta AT1 preparation, corporate tax planning, instalment calculations, and filing-position advice.

The planning matters more than the filing. Salary versus dividend, when to trigger a gain, how to use the small business deduction across associated companies, what a capital dividend account balance is actually worth — these are decisions with real dollars attached, and they're easier made before year-end than after.

  • Financial statements

Compilation engagements under CSRS 4200 (formerly Notice to Reader, or NTR) and review engagements under CSRE 2400, prepared under ASPE.

If your bank or a lender has asked for statements, we can tell you which level of engagement they actually require — the answer is often less than what was requested, and the difference in cost is significant.

  • Bookkeeping and cloud accounting

Monthly, quarterly, or annual bookkeeping. Payroll and source deduction remittances. Bank and credit card reconciliations. QuickBooks Online and Xero setup, cleanup, and migration from desktop or paper systems.

We're certified in both QuickBooks Online and Xero, so the recommendation you get is based on which one suits your operation rather than which one we happen to know. As a certified partner on both platforms we can also set your subscription up at a discounted rate, billed through us rather than direct.

Clean books during the year cost less than reconstructing them in the spring, and they give you numbers you can actually manage from.

  • GST and information returns

GST/HST registration, return preparation, and input tax credit review — including the areas where the rules are genuinely awkward: exempt supplies, mixed-use assets, related-party transactions, and non-profit and charity treatment.

Information returns: T4, T4A, T5, T5018, and the associated summaries.

  • Farm and agricultural operations

A significant share of our practice. Cash-basis reporting and T2042 preparation, inventory adjustments, livestock and herd accounting, AgriInvest and AgriStability, and the specific rules that apply to farm property.

We also do the structural work: intergenerational transfers of farm corporations and farmland, capital gains exemption planning, and the analysis of whether an operation qualifies before it matters. Getting the qualification tests right years ahead of a transfer is usually the difference between a rollover and a tax bill.

  • Succession, estate, and trust

Terminal returns and estate T3s. Clearance certificates. Executor support. Twenty-one-year deemed disposition planning for family trusts. Corporate reorganizations to separate assets, redistribute voting control, or set up a transfer to the next generation.

Most of this work is better done early. If you're thinking about it, it's not too soon.

  • Business advisory

Incorporation analysis — whether it makes sense for you, with the numbers run rather than the general rule quoted. Shareholder and partnership arrangements. Business valuations. Financing and lender reporting. Cash flow and performance analysis.

Cyber-security and systems review. A practical look at how your business handles its data — accounting file access, user permissions, email security, multi-factor authentication, backups, and how you'd actually recover if something went wrong. Not an assurance engagement and not a penetration test: a working review of where a small business is exposed, and what to fix first.

  • Process and systems

Some problems aren't accounting problems. The invoice run takes a day because three systems don't talk to each other. Payroll sits on a spreadsheet nobody quite trusts, because a payroll subscription costs more than it saves. Month end depends on somebody remembering a sequence of steps in the right order.

We build for that. A purpose-made workbook with the calculations locked down and tested rather than assembled by hand each time. A connection between two systems so a figure is entered once instead of three times. A notification that fires when something arrives, so nobody has to keep checking. A manual step that has quietly cost hours a month for years, automated.

This comes out of doing the work rather than out of selling software. We find these problems in your books, which means we already know what the numbers have to do before anything gets built to produce them.

It isn't IT support, and it isn't a replacement for the software you run. Where an off-the-shelf product already does the job properly, we'll tell you to buy it.
